Overview

A 3-day spiritual and cultural circuit covering Indore, Ujjain, and Omkareshwar is one of Central India’s most popular journeys. This itinerary efficiently balances the religious significance of two Jyotirlingas with the heritage and culinary fame of Indore.

Day 1: Spiritual Awakening in Ujjain

  • Morning: Arrive at Indore (Airport or Railway Station) and drive to Ujjain (approx. 55 km / 1.5 hours). Check into your hotel.

  • Afternoon: Visit the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the 12 sacred shrines of Lord Shiva. Explore the newly developed Shri Mahakal Lok Corridor, featuring stunning sculptures and murals.

  • Evening: Head to Ram Ghat on the banks of the Kshipra River for the evening Aarti. Afterward, visit the unique Kal Bhairav Temple, where liquor is famously offered as Prasad.

  • Overnight: Ujjain.

Day 2: The Sacred Island of Omkareshwar

  • Early Morning: (Optional) Attend the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar (requires advance booking).

  • Morning: After breakfast, drive to Omkareshwar (approx. 140 km / 4 hours).

  • Afternoon: Visit the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, located on Mandhata Island in the Narmada River. Cross the suspension bridge or take a boat to reach the temple. Also visit the Mamleshwar Temple (Amareshwar), which is considered the other half of the Jyotirlinga.

  • Evening: Witness the serene Narmada Aarti or take a boat ride around the island to see the Statue of Oneness (Adi Shankaracharya).

  • Overnight: Omkareshwar.

Day 3: Heritage and Flavors of Indore

  • Morning: Drive back to Indore (approx. 80 km / 2.5 hours).

  • Afternoon: Explore the city’s royal heritage at Rajwada Palace (the 18th-century Holkar residence) and the opulent Lal Bagh Palace. If time permits, visit the Kanch Mandir, a temple entirely adorned with glass and mirrors.

  • Evening: Immerse yourself in the food culture. Visit Chappan Dukan for legendary snacks like Poha-Jalebi or Sarafa Bazaar, a jewelry market that transforms into a vibrant night street food hub.

  • Departure: Transfer to Indore Airport or Railway Station for your return journey.

Key Highlights

  • Spiritual: Two Jyotirlingas (Mahakaleshwar & Omkareshwar) and the Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth.

  • Cultural: The architectural grandeur of the Holkar dynasty in Indore.

  • Culinary: Indore’s world-famous street food scene.

Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: October to March for pleasant weather.

  • Booking: If you wish to attend the Bhasma Aarti in Ujjain, ensure you book online at the official temple website several weeks in advance.

  • Attire: Modest clothing is recommended for temple visits; some specific rituals may require traditional attire (dhotis/saris).
