Overview
This 3-night itinerary perfectly blends the raw wilderness of Satpura Tiger Reserve (Madhai) with the misty waterfalls and colonial charm of Pachmarhi.
The most efficient route is to start at Madhai (closer to the Pipariya/Itarsi railheads) and then move uphill to Pachmarhi.
📅 Trip Overview: 1N Madhai + 2N Pachmarhi
Day 1: Arrival & Riverside Serenity (Madhai)
-
Morning: Arrive at Pipariya Railway Station (approx. 1.5-hour drive to Madhai) or Itarsi (approx. 2-hour drive).
-
Afternoon: Check into your riverside resort. Madhai is unique because you must cross the Denwa River by boat to enter the core forest.
-
Evening: Enjoy a Sunset Buffer Safari or a peaceful Night Safari (if available) to spot nocturnal wildlife like the Rusty-spotted cat or Sloth bears.
-
Stay: Overnight at Madhai.
Day 2: Into the Wild & Uphill Drive (Madhai ➔ Pachmarhi)
-
Early Morning: Head out for a Jeep Safari in the Madhai Core Zone. Satpura is famous for being less crowded than Kanha, offering better chances to see Leopards, Wild Dogs (Dholes), and Indian Gaur.
-
Late Morning: Return for breakfast and check out.
-
Afternoon: Drive to Pachmarhi (approx. 100 km / 3 hours). The winding ghat road offers beautiful views as you ascend the Satpura range.
-
Evening: Visit the Pandav Caves (ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves) and enjoy the sunset at Lake Pachmarhi.
-
Stay: Overnight at Pachmarhi.
Day 3: The Queen of Satpura (Pachmarhi Local)
-
Morning: Hire a local 4x4 Gypsy (mandatory for most points). Start with Bee Falls—a 115-ft drop where you can take a refreshing dip.
-
Afternoon: Explore the spiritual side at Jata Shankar Cave and Reechhgarh (a natural amphitheater-like rock formation). Visit Handi Khoh, a massive 300-ft deep canyon.
-
Evening: The grand finale—Dhoopgarh, the highest point in Madhya Pradesh. It offers a spectacular 360-degree view of the sun setting over the jagged peaks.
-
Stay: Overnight at Pachmarhi.
Day 4: Heritage & Departure
-
Morning: Visit Bada Mahadev and Gupt Mahadev (tight cave shrines). If time permits, stop by the Priyadarshini Point for a bird's-eye view of the valley.
-
Afternoon: Depart for Pipariya Station (approx. 1 hour) for your journey home.
💡 Quick Travel Tips
-
Safari Booking: Book your Madhai safari well in advance via the MP Forest official portal, as permits are limited.
-
Local Transport: Your private car won't be allowed at many Pachmarhi sightseeing spots (like Bee Falls or Dhoopgarh); you must hire a registered Local Gypsy.
-
Best Time: October to March is ideal for weather. April to June is great for tiger sightings in Madhai, though Pachmarhi will be warmer.
-
Closed Dates: Madhai (Core Zone) is closed during the monsoon (July 1st to September 30th).
